A minissérie da HBO Mildred Pierce tem base em livro de mesmo nome escrito por James. M. Cain, autor de Pacto de Sangue. A obra já foi transportada para as telas de cinema com o filme Alma em Suplício, de 1945; tendo sido indicado a 6 Oscar, ganhou o de melhor atriz para Joan Crawford.
No livro, situado nos anos 30, é narrada a história de uma mulher de classe média que vive a Grande Depressão americana. Divorciada, ela luta para manter suas filhas trabalhando como garçonete em um restaurante. Envolvendo-se com um homem mais rico, ela tenta subir na vida. Mas, sua maior preocupação é manter o amor e o respeito da filha, uma jovem ambiciosa que explora o dinheiro e o amor de sua mãe. A história se desenvolve em torno dessa relação.
A minissérie será adaptada por Todd Haynes (de I'm Not There) em parceria com Jon Raymond em um total de 5 episódios. A direção está a cargo de Haynes, que também será um dos produtores executivos. A produção é da MGM em associação à Ilene Landress (de The Sopranos). As filmagens começaram em abril.
Elenco: Kate Winslet (The Reader, Titanic), Evan Rachel Wood (True Blood, Across the Universe), Guy Pearce (The Road, The Count of Monte Cristo), Melissa Leo (Treme), Brian F. O'Byrne (FlashForward, Brotherhood), James LeGros (Sleeper Cell, Ally McBeal).

CARNIVALE também é da HBO, ambientando na década de 30 e durante a depressão, mas são propostas muito diferentes.
